WHAT IS MSM?

This compound, naturally present in the body and in many foods (fruits, vegetables, grains, milk, seaweed, meat, seafood, etc.), has powerful anti-inflammatory activity.

MSM was discovered in the 1970s by researchers at Portland Oregon Health Sciences University (USA).
MSM stands for methyl-sulfonyl-methane.
It circulates throughout the human body via blood plasma and is often used in the treatment of inflammatory conditions, particularly to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis and arthritis.
To reproduce the molecule naturally present in the body, the industry uses wood pulp (pine lignin, for example).
Although it is derived from a natural raw material, its manufacture involves a laboratory process.
It is a white powder with a bitter taste and no particular odour.
Despite the body's capacity to produce MSM naturally, supplementation may be useful to increase levels and capitalize fully on its anti-inflammatory properties.
A course of treatment is often recommended for pain of inflammatory origin, such as gout, osteoarthritis or arthritis.
MSM powder can be taken as is, or in capsules, tablets or capsules.
MSM can also be combined with other active ingredients such as glucosamine or chondroitin, particularly as part of an anti-rheumatism cure.
The value of MSM in supplementation lies in its high sulfur content: 34% of it is elemental sulfur. Bioavailable, elemental sulfur is free and can be used by the body.
Hypotheses about its therapeutic uses are based primarily on the role played by sulfur compounds in the body.
Thanks to the sulfur it contains, MSM is said to help preserve immune function and maintain connective tissue (tendons, deep dermis, collagen, cartilage, etc.) in good condition.
It even acts as a catalyst in the process of converting food into energy, and helps to eliminate toxins from the body.
MSM owes its reputation to its ability to regulate the inflammatory response. This anti-inflammatory activity confers benefits in cases of :
✅ Rheumatism: The best-known and most widespread use of MSM is in the treatment of rheumatism such as osteoarthritis and arthritis. Indeed, several studies have shown that taking MSM can help reduce inflammatory pain, as well as joint stiffness and swelling.
✅ Inflammatory pathologies: Thanks to its anti-inflammatory activity, MSM is also of interest in the management of other inflammatory disorders. In particular, one study highlighted its potential efficacy for patients suffering from interstitial cystitis. Other studies have looked at its use in the management of allergic rhinitis, particularly seasonal rhinitis. It would appear that MSM can be effective in reducing associated symptoms, including respiratory symptoms.
According to current scientific data, MSM also appears to enhance the antioxidant activity of several enzymes. In this way, it would help combat oxidative stress, a phenomenon known to be responsible for numerous cellular damages and implicated in the body's aging process.
Contraindications :
MSM is a compound naturally present in the human body. It is well tolerated by the body. However, given its activity, MSM is contraindicated as a precautionary measure in :
* children and pregnant or breast-feeding women
* subjects suffering from kidney disorders
* patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy.
Side effects :
To date, no major side effects have been associated with taking MSM. Only a few minor, transient side effects have been reported: nausea, diarrhea and headaches.
